hmm..

Sorry for the delay. The second image kind of lost interest in since the figures are all very static. I tried to fix the foreground a bit... but I think I need to work out the composition more and make it less static. The first image is a colour study. I tried to restrict myself to complementary colours.

  1. i still think using a few highlights in the first thing would help, just to work the paper a bit more. you decided against it in the end?
ANd for the second one, i dont know about too static, but what might make it more interesting would be to have a bit more interaction, te old woman watching the kid, same with the man up front. something like that.

  2. The composition is interesting, but the rendering flattens it out more than it needs to. Its also partially the fact that all most of the faces are in profile which automatically flattens the planes, this adds the challenge of defining 3dimensional form when you dont have much to work with. It helps if you exaggerate the light hitting the planes away from the viewer, particularly with highlight. That would make the form 'turn' more.
There is also a tangent between the little kid and the middle ground guy's pants which flattens the composition further. Exaggerate that overlap to show the depth, well placed overlapping elements help a lot in giving a space some dimension.
